【ロトルア】地熱とマオリ文化の街｜突然、”Black Power”と言うギャングのメンバーに殴られました…

どうも！世界旅してます。タイキです。
約2ヶ月半のキウイファーム生活を終えて、
最初に向かったのは、地熱とマオリ文化で有名な街「ロトルア」
……のはずだったんですが、
到着してすぐ、色々ありすぎました。
「え、旅開始からそんなことある？」ってことが、普通に起きます。
どうやらこの旅、最初から本気で試してきてるみたいです笑
ランダムな出会いこそ、旅の醍醐味
ロトルア初日。
オポティキからバスで約2時間揺られて到着すると、たまたま同じバスに乗っていた日本人の友達（なおき）と一緒に行動することに。
マオリの伝統料理「ハンギ」を食べたり、
街を軽く散策したりして、いったん解散。
その後、この街では初となるYouTube撮影をしようと、カメラを持って一人で街を歩いていると…
なんと、2日前に「またどこかで！」と別れたキウイメンバーと偶然再会。
いろいろ話したあと、「じゃあ、一緒にトレッキング行こうか」
そんな流れで、気づけば山へ向かうことに。
正直、ものすごく有名な山というわけでもありません。
それなのに、この景色。
どこを切り取っても、絵になる。
人工物より自然のほうが、圧倒的に存在感があるとあらためて思いました。
ニュージーランドは、やっぱり自然大国。
そして、本当に自然が美しい国ですわ
有名じゃなくても、ただ歩くだけで感動できる。
それが、この国を旅する一番の贅沢なのかもしれません。
そして何より、人との出会い。
これが、旅のすべてを何倍も楽しくしてくれます。
景色がきれいだった理由も、トレッキングが特別に感じた理由も、振り返れば、そこに「一緒に笑える誰か」がいたから。
やっぱり旅は、場所よりも人。
そう思わせてくれる出会いが、また一つ増えました。

地熱と温泉が有名らしいけど、日本人にとってはちょっと…
ニュージーランド北島にあるロトルアは、地熱地帯として有名な街。
街のあちこちから白い煙が立ち上り、硫黄の香りが漂う、まさに「地球が生きている」ことを感じられる場所です。
街の中心部には源泉が湧き出る公園や無料の足湯スポットがあり、温泉施設も数多くあります。
さすがは“ニュージーランドの温泉の街”
そして今回は、ロトルア観光の定番スポットでもあるテプイヤと、泥温泉で有名なヘルズゲートへ行ってきました。
結論から言うと、どちらも素晴らしい場所でした。
ただ……
正直に言うと、日本人として最初に思ったのはこれでした。
「うーん……思ったより普通かも？」
というのも、日本人は温泉に慣れすぎているんですよね。
ただ白い煙が立ち上っているだけの場所や、温泉がぐつぐつと沸騰している景色を見ても、
「あぁ、温泉だね」という感覚になってしまう。
日本の温泉地では割と見慣れている光景だからです。
もしロトルアでこういった景色だけを見ていたら、正直「なんだ、こんなものか…」と少しガッカリしていたかもしれません。
でも、テプイヤは違いました。
ここには巨大な泥プールや、空高く吹き上がる間欠泉があり、日本の温泉街ではなかなか見られないダイナミックな景色が広がっています。
ボコボコと音を立てながら動く泥のプール。
勢いよく噴き上がる間欠泉。
その光景を見ていると、
「地球って、本当に生きてるんだな…」と、改めて感じさせられます。
さらに、ここではマオリ文化のショーも行われていて、伝統音楽や舞踊、そして有名なハカも見ることができました。
これもかなり見応えがありましたね。
ロトルアに来たなら、テプイヤはほぼマストで行くべきスポットだと思います。
そしてその後、もう一つ楽しみにしていた場所へ。
それは、泥温泉で有名なヘルズゲートです。
実際に泥温泉に入ってみた感想ですが……正直、日本でこの温泉に入ったとしたら、
「うーん、普通かな……」
もしかしたら、そんな感想になっていたと思います。
温泉のクオリティだけで見れば、日本の温泉はやっぱりレベルが高いですからね。
でも今回は違いました。
というのも、日本を出てから数ヶ月。
ずっとシャワー生活で、湯船に浸かるのは久しぶりだったんです。
泥温泉にゆっくり体を沈めた瞬間…
「フゥゥゥゥ〜〜〜〜……」
思わず声が出るくらい気持ちいい。
まさに、
「キモチィィィィーーー！！」
って感じでした。
やっぱり日本人にとって、湯船に浸かる時間って最高なんですよね。
しかもここでは、泥パックも体験できます。
これが意外と良くて、温泉に入りながら泥パックをしている時間は、ちょっとした贅沢な気分でした。
正直、日本の温泉と比べると評価は変わるかもしれません。
でも、海外生活が長くなって湯船に飢えているバックパッカーやワーホリ勢。
そんな人たちには、かなりおすすめできるスポットだと思います。

まさかの出来事…ロトルアで起きた衝撃のハプニング
マオリ文化の中心地として有名なロトルア。
せっかく来たなら外せないスポットがあります。
それがマオリの伝統文化を体験できるマオリビレッジです。
観光用に作られた村とはいえ、伝統的な建物や彫刻、文化展示などがあり、マオリ文化の雰囲気をしっかり味わうことができます。
「ロトルアに来たなら、やっぱりここは見ておかないと。」
そんな気持ちでゆっくり観光してきました。
展示を見たり、写真を撮ったりしながら村を歩き回り、
大満足でホステルへ帰ろうとしていたそのとき…
思いがけない出来事が起きました。
道を歩いていると、突然ひとりのマオリの男性に声をかけられたんです。
「俺を撮影してくれ」
僕がカメラを持っていたからでしょう。
突然のお願いでしたが、僕はむしろこう思いました。
「ラッキーじゃん。」
「マオリビレッジの後に、リアルなマオリにインタビューできたら最高のネタになる。」
そう思ってカメラを向けたその瞬間でした。
いきなり顔面を殴られ、手に持っていたカメラを奪われたんです。
そして男は一言。
「Catch me!!!」
そう言って、こちらを挑発するように笑いながら走り去りました。
あまりにも突然の出来事で、一瞬なにが起きたのか理解できませんでした。
ただひとつ確かなのは
僕の戦闘本能のスイッチがONになったこと。
気づいたときには、すでに全力で追いかけていました。
距離はそれほど離れていません。
数十秒もしないうちに追いつき、男が振り向いた瞬間…
体が勝手に動いていました。
肘を合わせる形でカウンター。
男はその場に倒れ込み、カメラを手放しました。
ただ、僕はココでは終わりません。
倒れた所に顔や腹部にフルパワーの蹴りを数発…
そして、僕はすぐにカメラを取り返し、その場から一目散にダッシュ。
正直、かなりアドレナリンが出ていたと思います。
ココだけの話、彼は出血しもがいていました…
なぜ、ココまで追撃をしたのか…
それはマオリは銃を持っている人が多いと事前に情報を入手していたからです…
だから逃げる前にトドメを刺さなければいけなかった。
そう、仕方ない正当防衛なんです。
あとから聞いた話ですが、ロトルア周辺ではこういったトラブルが起きることもあるそうです。
と言うのも北島にはギャングが多いらしく、今回の男も大きな拳のタトゥーで有名なBlack Powerと言うギャングの一員だったそう…
もちろん、ニュージーランド全体が危険というわけではありません。
実際、これまで旅をしていて危険を感じたことはほとんどありませんでした。
ただ今回の出来事で改めて思いました。
海外では、どんな場所でも油断は禁物。
これもまた、旅のリアルな一面なのかもしれません。
…とはいえ。
カメラを無事取り返せたのは本当にラッキーでした。
もしあのまま盗まれていたら、この旅の写真も動画も全部なくなっていたかもしれませんからね。
ロトルアに行く人はぜひマオリ文化を楽しんでください。
でも、貴重品の管理だけはしっかりと。
それが今回の旅で学んだ、ちょっとハードな教訓でした。
リアル版マリオカートをしてきた！
ロトルアに来たらぜひ体験してほしいアクティビティのひとつが、ロトルアスカイラインのリュージュ。
簡単に言うと、リアル版マリオカートみたいな乗り物です。
今回は友達3人で行ってきました。
正直、最初はちょっとこう思っていました。
「これ…子供向けなんじゃない？」
見た目もシンプルなカートだし、観光地によくあるアトラクションかなと。
でも実際に乗ってみると、これが想像以上に面白い。
ブレーキとハンドルを操作しながら坂道のコースを滑り降りていくのですが、スピードもそこそこ出るし、カーブも多くて普通にテクニックが必要。
油断すると普通にコースアウトしそうになります。
そして何より楽しいのが、友達とのレース感覚。
「待て待て！」「うわ速すぎ！！」
そんなことを言いながら競争していると、気づけば全員めちゃくちゃ本気になっていました。
最初は「子供向けかな？」と思っていたけど、大人でも普通に楽しめるアクティビティでした。
ロトルアに行くなら、観光の合間にぜひやってみてほしい体験です。

森の中にある天然温泉が最高すぎた！
ロトルア観光の最後に向かったのは、無料で入れる天然温泉スポット
Kerosene Creek（ケロシーンクリーク）。
ここはロトルア市内から少し離れた場所にあるため、車かヒッチハイクでアクセスする必要があります。
ちょっと行きづらい場所ではありますが、実際に行ってみると「来てよかった」と思える場所でした。
森の中を少し歩くと現れるのが、温泉になっている川。
そう、ここは川全体が温泉なんです。
自然の中に流れる川にそのまま入るスタイルで、まさにニュージーランドらしいワイルドな野湯体験。
温度も絶妙で、熱すぎずぬるすぎず、ずっと入っていられるちょうどいい温かさ。
森に囲まれながら温泉に浸かっていると、なんとも言えないリラックスした時間が流れます。
ロトルアには有料の温泉施設もたくさんありますが、
正直なところ…
個人的にはここが一番よかったです。
自然の中で入る温泉という特別感もあって、「ニュージーランドらしい温泉体験」をするなら間違いなくおすすめ。
ロトルアに来たら、ぜひ立ち寄ってみてほしいスポットです。

Rotorua: The City of Geothermal Wonders and Māori Culture — And the Day I Got Punched by a “Black Power” Gang Member
Hey! I’m Taiki, traveling around the world.
After finishing about two and a half months working at a kiwifruit farm,
the first place I headed to was Rotorua, a town famous for its geothermal activity and Māori culture.
…or at least, that was the plan.
Because right after I arrived, so many unexpected things happened.
The kind of things that make you think,
“Wait… this is happening on the first day of the trip?”
It seems like this journey is already testing me from the very beginning. Haha
Random Encounters Are the Best Part of Traveling
It was my first day in Rotorua.
After about a two-hour bus ride from Opotiki, I arrived in the city and ended up hanging out with a Japanese friend, Naoki, who happened to be on the same bus.
We grabbed some hāngī, a traditional Māori dish,
walked around the city for a bit, and then eventually went our separate ways.
Later, I went out alone with my camera to shoot my first YouTube video in Rotorua.
And then something crazy happened.
I randomly ran into some friends from the kiwifruit farm—people I had said goodbye to just two days earlier, thinking, “See you somewhere in the world someday!”
Travel works in mysterious ways.
We started chatting, catching up on everything.
And before I knew it, someone said,
“Hey, why don’t we go for a hike together?”
And just like that, we were heading toward the mountains.
To be honest, it wasn’t some famous mountain or popular tourist spot.
But the scenery was incredible.
No matter where you looked, it felt like a perfect picture.
Moments like that remind me that nature has a presence that no man-made place can match.
New Zealand really is a country of nature.
And the landscapes here are simply beautiful.
Even if a place isn’t famous, just walking through it can leave you feeling amazed.
Maybe that’s the greatest luxury of traveling in this country.
And more than anything, travel is about the people you meet.
Those random encounters make the entire experience ten times more meaningful.
Looking back, the reason the scenery felt so beautiful,
and the reason the hike felt so special,
was probably because there were people there to share the moment with.
People to laugh with.
In the end, travel isn’t really about the places.
It’s about the people.
And this trip gave me another unforgettable encounter.

Rotorua: Geothermal Wonders, Māori Culture, and Mud Baths
Rotorua, located on New Zealand’s North Island, is famous for its geothermal activity and hot springs.
The town is full of steam rising from the ground, and the smell of sulfur fills the air—it really feels like the Earth is alive.
In the city center, you can find parks with natural springs, free foot baths, and many hot spring facilities.
No wonder it’s called “New Zealand’s hot spring town.”
On this trip, I visited two of Rotorua’s classic attractions: Te Puia, known for its geothermal features and Māori culture, and Hell’s Gate, famous for its mud baths.
And honestly? Both places were incredible.
First Impressions: “Is this it…?”
At first, I have to admit, as a Japanese visitor, my reaction was:
“Hmm… it’s… kind of normal?”
The reason is simple—Japanese people are just too used to hot springs.
Seeing steam rising from the ground or boiling pools doesn’t feel extraordinary.
These are sights we often see at Japanese onsen towns.
If I had only seen these geothermal areas in Rotorua, I might have been a little disappointed, thinking,
“Oh… so this is it.”
But Te Puia was different.
Here, there are massive mud pools and geysers shooting high into the sky—dramatic sights you don’t usually see in Japanese hot spring towns.
The mud pools bubble and churn with loud, rumbling sounds,
while the geysers blast water into the air with amazing force.
Watching this, I couldn’t help but think,
“Wow… the Earth really is alive.”
On top of that, Te Puia also features Māori cultural performances,
including traditional music, dance, and the famous Haka.
It was definitely a must-see.
If you’re visiting Rotorua, Te Puia should be on your list.
After that, I headed to Hell’s Gate, famous for its mud baths.
Honestly, if I had experienced this in Japan, I might have thought,
Hmm… it’s okay, I guess.
Japanese hot springs are just on a different level in terms of quality.
But this time was different.
After months of living overseas, I hadn’t soaked in a proper hot spring bath for a long time.
The moment I sank into the mud bath…
Ahhhhhh…
It felt incredible.
It was one of those moments where you just let out a sound without thinking, like:
This is AMAZING!
On top of that, you can try a mud pack here.
It felt surprisingly luxurious—sitting in the hot bath while covering yourself in mud was such a unique experience.
Compared to Japanese onsen, the experience might feel different.
But for backpackers and working holiday travelers who’ve been living abroad and missing a proper soak,
this is highly recommended.
If you come to Rotorua, make sure to check out:

- Hell’s Gate – for a relaxing mud bath and a long-awaited soak
Both of these give you a taste of what makes Rotorua truly special.
An Unexpected Incident… The Shocking Moment That Happened in Rotorua
Rotorua is famous as the center of Māori culture.
If you come here, there’s one spot you really can’t miss: the Māori Village.
Even though it’s a tourist attraction, the village features traditional buildings, carvings, and cultural displays, giving you a real sense of Māori culture.
If you’re visiting Rotorua, this is definitely a place you should see.
That’s exactly how I felt as I explored the village at a relaxed pace.
I wandered through the village, checking out the displays and taking photos, and headed back to my hostel feeling fully satisfied.
And then… something completely unexpected happened.
While walking down the street, a Māori man suddenly approached me.
“Hey, take a picture of me.”
I guess he saw that I had a camera.
It was such a sudden request, but I actually thought:
Lucky me! Getting a real interview with a Māori person right after visiting the village would make amazing content.
So I pointed my camera at him—and that’s when it happened.
He punched me in the face and snatched the camera from my hands.
Then he said one word:
“Catch me!!!”
Laughing provocatively, he ran off.
It all happened so suddenly that I barely understood what was going on.
The only thing I knew for sure was: my fight instinct had kicked in.
Before I knew it, I was running after him full speed.
The distance wasn’t far.
Within a few seconds, I caught up, and as he turned to face me…
my body reacted automatically.
I delivered a counter with my elbow.
He collapsed, letting go of the camera.
But I wasn’t done yet.
I struck him a few more times to the face and abdomen…
Then I grabbed the camera and sprinted away as fast as I could.
Honestly, my adrenaline was probably off the charts.
Just between us, he was bleeding and struggling on the ground…
Why did I go that far?
Because I had been warned that many Māori carry guns.
So I knew I had to stop him before he could get away.
Yes, it was self-defense.
Later, I learned that incidents like this can happen around Rotorua.
Apparently, the North Island has a lot of gangs, and this guy turned out to be part of Black Power, a gang known for their large fist tattoos.
Of course, that doesn’t mean New Zealand is dangerous in general.
In fact, during my travels so far, I’ve rarely felt unsafe.
But this experience reminded me: you can never let your guard down anywhere abroad.
That’s just part of the reality of travel.
…Still, I was really lucky to get my camera back.
If he had gotten away with it, all the photos and videos from this trip might have been gone.
So, if you go to Rotorua, definitely enjoy the Māori culture.
But make sure to take care of your valuables.
That’s the slightly hard lesson I learned from this trip.
Tried Real-Life Mario Kart!
One of the must-try activities when visiting Rotorua is the Luge at Rotorua Skyline.
Simply put, it’s like a real-life version of Mario Kart.
This time, I went with three friends.
Honestly, at first I thought:
Isn’t this… for kids?
The carts looked simple, and I assumed it was just another typical tourist attraction.
But once we got on, it was way more fun than I expected.
You control the brakes and steering while racing down the hill course. The speed is decent, and the track has plenty of curves, so it actually requires some skill.
If you’re not careful, you could easily go off the course.
The best part? Racing against your friends.
“Wait, wait!”
“Whoa, too fast!!”
Shouting things like that while competing, everyone ends up getting completely serious.
At first, I thought it was just for kids, but it’s actually a really fun activity for adults too.
If you’re visiting Rotorua, definitely try this in between sightseeing.
Wild Natural Hot Springs in the Forest!
The last stop of my Rotorua sightseeing was a free natural hot spring called Kerosene Creek.
It’s a bit outside the city, so you need a car or hitchhiking to get there.
It’s a little tricky to reach, but once you get there, you’ll be glad you came.
After a short walk through the forest, you’ll find a river that’s actually a hot spring.
Yes, the whole river is a hot spring!
You can soak directly in the river flowing through nature — a truly wild New Zealand hot spring experience.
The water temperature is perfect — not too hot, not too cold, just right to stay in for a long time.
Sitting in the hot water surrounded by the forest, you feel completely relaxed.
There are many paid hot springs in Rotorua, but honestly…
For me, this one was the best.
The special feeling of soaking in a natural spring, combined with the beautiful surroundings, makes it a must-visit for a “true New Zealand hot spring experience.”
